Preville Big Band — Technical Info

Stage

The band needs a space 16 feet deep, and 24 feet wide. This works pretty well with standard 4 x 8 foot risers.

If you can make the part shown in green (back row) about a few inches higher than the rest, it gives the band a lovely multi-tier look.

Please do not put other junk on the stage such as flowers, signs, etc. We really do need that space!

Stage placement

Ideally you want the band next to the dance floor. Often that is in the middle of the room, but not always. Talk to the hall manager. If you like, call us and we can look at the hall together with you. Having the band at one end is usually not too bad either.

Sound

The band is equipped with a full sound system which we will set up starting about 2 or 3 hours before the band plays. It good powerful enough for a room of up to 300 people, or even small outdoor concerts.

For larger sound requirements you can rent equipment such as speakers and power amplifiers. We would then plug our mics and mixer into that system. Alternatively you can have the same technician also bring mics, mixing-board, monitors... the whole works.

If you have a sound technician working with you, please ask him/her to contact us in advance so we can coordinate equipment requirements.  Call Tommy at (514) 952-0419.

If someone out of the band is doing the "mixing", please remember that we are not a rock band, and the rhythm section should not be too loud. We feel very strongly about this.

Lighting

We have music-stand lights for the musicians and a small "disco light" for the dance floor. For wedding this is typically sufficient. However, if you want serious stage lighting you can rent that separately as well.

Chairs and table

We will need 6 chairs without armrests for the saxes and pianist. For our sound board we will also need a table about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Spare room

If you can, ask the hall to reserve us a room where musicians go during breaks, and where we can put our instrument and equipment cases. Some coffee and soft drinks (heck, maybe even a few sandwiches or dessert) there would be wonderful.
